Downloading And Installing FxMagnetic Software

The installation process for any FxMagnetic Software (i.e: Candlestick, RSI, BB, MACD, etc.) is similar. You can read more about it here.

Preparing Historical Data

Sufficient historical data is essential for accurate backtesting and strategy optimization. Without this, the potential of the software and backtesting results will be limited, and we don’t want that.

Preparing Historical Data

Chart Preparation:

  1. Open desired trading pair chart
  2. Select preferred time frame
  3. Turn off auto scroll
  4. Press and hold Home button on your keyboard
  5. Wait for data to load to the earliest available date while pressing on the Home button. Doing this action ensures all the historical data is loaded on the chart
  6. Once done, re-enable auto scroll

Pro Tip: Zoom out the chart for faster data loading.

MACD Scanner Setup

Initial Software Configuration

Building Your Trading Strategies

This software gives you the freedom to try hundreds of different settings. However, to get you started in the right direction, here is an example setting you can try.

Built-In Trading Strategies Quick Look

  • We suggest you start out with the MACD Reversal Regular first.
  • For SL/TP Type, choose ATR 14 which is the dynamic version.
  • For additional Trade Filter choose PSAR (Above=Only Buy / Below=Only). Note that Trade filters with ($) have to be purchased separately.
  • Click OK once these are selected.
  • This will take you to your chart where you will see this small panel.

Building Your Trading Strategies

Set the following Parameter Ranges (USDCAD, 1H time frame example):

  1. Stop Loss (SL) – from 40 to 200 with the step of 20.
    • Example: 40, 60, 80, 100, etc. until it reaches 200.
  2. Take Profit (TP) – from 60 to 400 with the step of 20.
    • Example: 60, 80, 100, 120, etc. until it reaches 400.
  3. Fast EMA – from 12 to 96 with the step of 12.
    • Example: 12, 24, 36, etc. until reaches 96.
  4. Slow EMA – from 26 to 208 with the step of 26.
    • Example: 26, 52, 78, etc. until it reaches 208.

You can see more sample settings in this cheat sheet. It’s important to understand that this is just the initial step and you are most likely to find better settings that are more profitable after you optimize.

Strategy Optimization

The optimization process tests thousands of combinations to find the most effective parameters for your strategy.

Preparation:

  1. Close unnecessary charts to improve processing speed. If possible, close other programs running on your computer too.
  2. Typical duration is 10 to 30 minutes depending on the computer’s power (hence closing other charts or programs).
  3. The software runs approximately 3,000 or more depending on your settings.
  4. Set optimization parameters:

Review Results (Important!):

  1. Check win rate (Example: aim for 50% win rate or higher for strategies with Risk/Reward of 2).
  2. Evaluate total profit
  3. Assess drawdown levels
  4. Review return-to-drawdown ratio (I recommend aiming for 4 and higher)
  5. Examine trade frequency (example: 1.9 signals per week)

Auto Trader Configuration

Upon attaching to the chart, the MACD Autotrader automates the MACD Scanner indicator. Using it together ensures consistent execution without emotional interference.

Basic Setup:

  1. Locate MACD Autotrader in Expert Advisors list under Navigator.
  2. Drag to the same chart where your MACD scanner  is attached.
  3. Input license key
  4. Select indicator sync mode (recommended default)
  5. Manually set a unique magic number for strategy identification (example: 1777, 10, 125, etc.)

Auto Trader Configuration Basic Setup

Risk Management Settings:

  1. For Money Management Mode, we suggest you choose Risk Per Trade (%)
  2. Set risk per trade (0.25% – 1% recommended). Once set, the software calculates the lot size automatically.
  3. Verify lot size and margin requirements displayed.

Verifying The Setup:

Once the setup is done, the auto-trader will print information on the top left corner of the chart. In the screenshot below, it shows that the MACD autotrader was set up during the weekend. However, this will auto activate as soon as the market opens.

Auto Trader Configuration Verifying Setup

It is important to understand that the speed of the output varies depending on the frequency of signals produced. Example: 5 minute time frame gives more signals faster but most of these signals are low quality. Unlike the 4 hour time frame which is slow yet gives better quality signals.

Strategy Monitoring

Proper monitoring ensures strategy effectiveness and helps identify when adjustments are needed.

Performance Metrics:

  1. Monitor consecutive wins/losses
  2. Track win rate percentage
  3. Review profit/loss ratios
  4. Evaluate drawdown levels
  5. Watch trade frequency

Strategy Validation:

  1. Allow minimum 20-30 trades for statistical significance
  2. Monitor for three consecutive losses (Potential warning sign if strategy backtest showed 3 consecutive losses in the past)
  3. Track each strategy’s performance separately
  4. Compare results against backtest expectations

Strategy Portfolio Management

Building a robust trading portfolio requires careful strategy selection and monitoring.

Portfolio Development:

  1. Begin with 2-3 strategies.
  2. Add new strategies gradually.
  3. Diversify across different:
    1. Currency pairs
    2. time frames
    3. Trading instruments (forex, gold, indices)

Strategy Evaluation:

  1. Remove underperforming strategies.
  2. Keep successful strategies.
  3. Document performance metrics.
  4. Regular strategy review and optimization.

Tips For Success

  1. Higher time frames mean fewer but better trades – this is how real money is made in trading. The market wants you to overtrade on low time frames, but that’s often where traders lose. In short, quality vs. quantity.
  2. Be patient with results. Some strategies might need 5 days (or more) before you see your first winning trade. Understand this so you can avoid overtrading.
  3. Don’t immediately abandon your strategy when market behavior changes.
  4. A strategy with a high risk to reward ratio usually has long losing streaks, while a strategy with a low risk to reward ratio has less losing streaks. Your aim is to find a system that gives good return while keeping your drawdowns low.
  5. Never judge multiple strategies by overall account balance. A profitable strategy might be hidden by a losing one – track them separately.
  6. Think of strategies like a portfolio. When one isn’t performing well, others might cover for it. Start small, master a few strategies first, then gradually expand.
  7. A 100% win rate strategy does not exist. Keep this in mind so you can avoid over-optimizing. Aim for a strategy that has great stats where the win rate is high enough to be profitable.
